About the Technique

What is Digital Painting?

Digital painting is an art form in which traditional painting techniques such as watercolor, oils, pencil, etc. are utilized by the artist using a digital painting stylus, digitizing tablet and computer software.

Digital painting software provides a similar environment to that of an artist working with traditional media: a canvas, brushes, mixing palettes, and a multitude of color options. The digital painter must employ many, if not all of the knowledge and techniques used by a traditional painter. Digital artists usually have a strong background in the traditional arts and are proficient at both.

Digital painting differs from other forms of digital art and computer generated art, in particular, it does not involve computer rendering from a model. The digital artist begins with a blank canvas, so to speak, and creates the image using various painting techniques and hand-applied brush strokes.

Please take a look at the 'Steps in a Digital Painting' gallery for step-by-step pictures of my process.
